Venetian food (#10)

Italy has wonderful food. Things are so fresh..the bread, the cheese. The wine is good. Since we are in an apartment and my roommates are all wonderful cooks, we have been enjoying the fresh vegetables, etc. but we do eat out and I take photos of the colorful foods.

Some kind of candy.

I had this fruit salad in Florence and it was delicious.

This was wonderful wine we had at dinner in a restaurant a couple of times. :)

At the Rialto Market there was also meats.

Yes...gelato is good!

In a store window I saw Campbell's soup in Italian.

Sharlyn savorimg her cappuccino .

Creme Carmel

Cannoli ... I love these things!

Not sure what these are?

I'll end with this photo as it is just so pretty!

Cats and dogs of Venice (#9)

Dogs seem to be allowed everywhere here in Venice . I've seen them in the grocery store, the restaurants, the stores, the vaporettos. Great place to have a dog! Not many stray cats around as they have been eliminated. We have seen a few cats that are in apartments or near their homes.
Here are photos of some of the animals I've seen here. We've met several people as we like to pet the dogs!

A Chow and a puppy.

Sometimes people will tie up their dogs onto their doorway..this cocker spaniel was tied outside his apartment near my apartment, early one morning.

This darling puppy, Mia, is a 4 month old Stafordshire bull terrier (not a pit bull). She almost looks fake here but she is very real! She was a cutie; I could take her home with me. She belongs to the neighborhood antique dealer.

This guy lounges around our apartment!

Photo taken from the apartment.

An older Bouvier.

This is our local trattoria where we have cappuccino every morning and the dogs come in with their owners .... Sometimes getting scraps from the shop owner!

A restaurant where we stopped for lunch and cappuccino. Isn't he a cutie?

Today we met Max, a pug, in a jewelry shop. He wasn't too interested in us but when a little girl came to see him he practically smiled at her!

This is my 80 lb lap dog back home...I miss her!

Rain rain go away. #8

I know that spring flowers need rain but this is getting to be enough. Here I Venice it is a damp cold. That is why all the Venetians (men too) wear the beautiful scarves. That is why we visitors buy all the lovely scarves.
Today our trip, after cappuccino at the trattoria, was to the Rialto Market. First, at the trattoria I love to watch the dogs come in. A couple of dogs will go back by the sandwiches and beg for a scrap which the tratorria owners usually give to the dogs.

On the Vaporetto heading towards the Rialto Bridge.

In Campo San Giacomo, with buildings from 1520 we found the granite hunchback that Rick Steve's travel guide suggested we find. He calls the area the "wall street" of medieval Europe and this column closest to the "Wall Street Journal."
Someone would climb the stairs and read the daily news from the doge, what ships were docked, the price of pepper, etc.

The porch here on this old church was a shelter for the poor. The church is St James the Minor and it watched over the business community, encouraging honesty when banking regulations were non existent.

Since nothing is grown on Venice, everything is shipped in and the market where they sell it is shown in my photos, along with the fish market.

Some meat in the case.

Fish in the market. Prices were very reasonable for fish and the fruit/vegetables.

We also ran into a spice shop.

We walked home, this being along the way.

I found a gooood cannolli! Yum.

Murano. (#7)

I thought that numbering these blogs while in Italy would help keep them straight but after having a couple of the blogs kind of "disappear" I don't know if it is working or not.

Anyway, today we went to Murano, our glass "Mecca" (to Sharlyn and I ). We took the Vaporetto across the Grand Canal to the San Marco area, then on to another Vaporetto to Murano .

This is a Vaporetto stop where we are getting off. On this boat we saw a military like guy get on with a gun strapped to his leg, and what might have been an Uzzi in his arms. Don't know who or what he was but I sure wasn't going to take his picture!

-
Mom..can't I go out and play? Dog in a window in Murano.

Nice grill work on a window.

Street art on the island. Glass of course!

Love this glass window at the restaurant we ate at.

More street art glass. This was by the glass school, Abate Zanetti. We stopped by to see Ofilia Cintra who was there making beads and also watched a glassmaker make some glass animals. It is a beautiful school.

This was in the Grand Canal .... Don't you think it was a bit overloaded??

We spent some money on Murano, helping the economy. More photos later of some of the jewelry.
We also bought some tools at Carlo Dona's. :)

Ciao!
